Bangladeshis Muslim spiritual leaders have always rejected prayers at sex workers burial ceremonies, often publicly portraying the sex industry, although completely legal, as immoral – until now.
On the 6th of February 2020, Hamida Begum officially became the first sex worker from Bangladesh bordello Daulatdia to receive a formal Islamic funeral. This religious breakthrough is amazing to see especially with the prominent stigma surrounding sex work in the Muslim majority Bangladesh.
A horde of grievers gathered at the the 65-year-old’s graveside to pay their respect to the woman they loved.
“I never dreamed that she would get such an honourable farewell”, said Begum’s daughter Laxmi, who like her mother, has become a sex worker.
