‘The gay Olympics’ | Sydney Wins Bid for WorldPride 2023

We are thrilled to announce on Monday, Sydney won its bid to host WorldPride in 2023. For those of you that don’t know, WorldPride is one of the largest and fastest growing international LGBTIQA+ events, that’s held every two years, in a different city around the world. The team at Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras worked tirelessly over the past few years and presented the 158 page bid to members of InterPride at their AGM in Athens, and were there to witness the epic win.

Sydney received a very impressive 60 per cent of the vote, ahead of Montreal, Canada winning 36 per cent and Houston, Texas with 3 per cent. This historic win makes it the first time in 20 years that WorldPride will be held in the Southern Hemisphere!

WorldPride 2023 festival will be held over February and March with a range of events including:

  • A Opening Ceremony,
  • A Pride March and
  • A Human Rights Conference and
  • A Closing Ceremony,

What makes the win for 2023 that much more special, is the fact it will coincide with three other major milestones that year – the 50th anniversary of Australia’s first Gay Pride week, the 45th anniversary of Sydney’s Mardi Gras and the 5th anniversary of marriage equality in Australia.

Sydney Mardi Gras co-chair Giovanni Campolo-Arcidiaco said bringing WorldPride to Australia meant “we can celebrate and shine a spotlight on the unique challenges faced by the LGBTQI community in the region”.

I hope you’re all ready because, 2023 is going to be one hell of party!
